Formed by explosive volcanic activity, obsidian is a glassy stone with powerful protective energy. It is often considered a "psychic vacuum cleaner" removing all negative energy and promoting positivity. An incredibly grounding stone, obsidian is associated with the root chakra. It is named for Obsidius, an ancient Roman who Pliny claimed to have discovered this stone in Ethiopia. However, obsidian was used to make arrowheads as far back as Paleolithic times.
